Arrest on driving, weapons charges
A Guelph man faces more than a dozen charges following an investigation of a vehicle being driven dangerously.
On January 3, officers spotted an unplated white Ford F150 being driven on Woodlawn Road West and entering a restaurant drive-through. An officer attempted to pull over the truck by standing in front of it. The driver proceeded forward requiring the officer to step aside to avoid being struck and fled the area. Officers were able to identify the driver.
On Wednesday members of the Break Enter Auto Theft Unit located the same truck, now spray-painted black, and followed it through the city to an address on Waterloo Avenue. The driver attempted to flee on foot but was caught and arrested following a brief pursuit. A search revealed suspected methamphetamine and psilocybin and a spring-loaded knife.
A 37-year-old Guelph man is charged with dangerous driving, flight from police, resisting arrest, two counts of possessing controlled substances, unauthorized possession of a weapon, two counts of breaching probation and several counts of driving while prohibited. He was held for a bail hearing Thursday.
Mazda stolen from downtown lot
The Guelph Police Service is investigating after an employee of a downtown business had her car stolen Wednesday night.
Just after midnight police were called to a business near Norfolk Street and Quebec Street. The victim stated she started her silver Mazda 3 hatchback five minutes earlier with her remote starter, then came outside to find the car missing. A witness told officers he was out for a smoke and saw a male approaching the car, get in and drive it away. He was described as 511 with a medium build, wearing a dark jacket with a hood and carrying a large flashlight.
The stolen Mazda was last seen driving westbound onto Paisley Street.

This can include parking indoors when possible or in well-lit areas, ensuring vehicle doors and windows are closed and locked, employing anti-theft devices to prevent vehicles from being started or steered and using devices to block signals from electronic keys. Please report suspicious activity around unattended vehicles, especially during overnight hours.
Impaired arrest after stop
A Guelph man is charged with impaired driving following a traffic stop Wednesday afternoon.
Shortly before 6 p.m. a member of the Guelph Police Service Traffic Unit observed a vehicle leaving a licensed establishment near the downtown. The vehicle was followed and pulled over on Morris Street.
The officer immediately detected an odour of alcohol from within the vehicle. After failing a roadside breath test the driver was arrested and transported to the police station, where further tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.
A 63-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. He will appear in court January 31.
